Is Maths Extension 2 worth doing for the ATAR?
Extension 2 has the strongest scaling of any NSW HSC subject. For students who can score above 70 it contributes meaningfully to the ATAR. For students likely to score below 65 the time cost may not be justified, and our tutors help students make that call from real performance data.
What raw mark do I need for the scaling to help?
Students scoring above 70 in internal assessments generally benefit from Extension 2 scaling. A raw 80 in Extension 2 typically scales to around 91, compared with a raw 80 in Advanced which scales to around 82. Around 65 to 70, careful ATAR modelling is worthwhile before committing.
